The Midnight Lake


The Midnight Lake started as a simple idea about a small woodland fellow chasing after a small light through the dark forest. I originally envisioned it as a single image, then thought it might be fun to create a series of three. Eventually I liked the concept so much that I felt I should try and complete the story with a fourth image, accompanying poem, and even an audio track. The result is the video below. It's something I'm quite happy to share on this blog and I hope some will find it to be an enchanting little piece of multi-media fiction.



Neither music nor poetry are particular strong suits of mine so creating this piece was quite the challenge for me, but I enjoyed doing this a great deal. If you have any thoughts or feelings on this project, I'd definitely love to hear them (big thanks to my friend, Andrew, for some early feedback).

A child of the winter... After being so pleasantly surprised by  IMPACT WINTER  and Audible original audio dramas in general, I was thrilled to find out that a second season had been released this year.  HOW I RATED IT  4/5  The sophomore season for IMPACT WINTER didn't quite wow me the same way that the original did, but I still found myself really enjoying coming back to this vampire apocalypse and following Darcy and Hope as they try to find a way to overthrow the vampire queen.  CONTENT Things pick up after a short time skip since the first season. REVIEW: DEFIANT (SONGS OF CHAOS #3)

Sons of the night... In the spirit of continuing to catch up on series I've started, I decided to read the third available book in the Songs of Chaos series, mistakenly thinking it was the last.  HOW I RATED IT  4/5  In spite of my incorrect belief that this was the last book in a trilogy, I had a great deal of fun with the third entry into the SONGS OF CHAOS series.  NOTE:  While this review does not contain major spoilers for  DEFIANT , it does mention specific things about  ASCENDANT  and UNBOUND that could be considered as such.   CHARACTERS As with the previous book, this adventure is told across multiple points of view. Holt, Talia, and Osric all return as key persons of interest and are now joined by others like the half-dragon Rake as well as Paragon Adaskar at different points. REVIEW: THE SWORD OF KAIGEN

Long live the emperor... THE SWORD OF KAIGEN is widely lauded as some of the best that Indie Fantasy has to offer. I'd heard so many wonderful things about it, that I stupidly splurged for the gorgeous Wraithmarked Kickstarter edition even though I'd never read this before. Thankfully that purchase paid off in the end.  HOW I RATED IT  5/5  M.L. Wang's acclaimed novel is one of the few instances where I personally felt that a hugely popular book actually lived up to all it's hype. Intricate world design, devastatingly beautiful character arcs, and some explosive action sequences kept me hanging on Wang's every word. CHARACTERS While this story balances characters and plot wonderfully, I think it is worth noting that every single character in this book felt so vividly real to me and I was fully invested in everything that happened to them.
