SEPTEMBER READS
Cooling down from the heavy reading month I had in August, September was a little slower, especially as I tried to dedicate a good chunk of my reading time to a Beta read which I will have to finish next month. That said, I still had some high-quality reads in the month of September to be grateful for.
1. A Knife in the Dark
A delightful 4/5 blend of science fiction and detective-noir fiction!
Every now and then I find something that is just pure fun. This novella definitely falls into that category. It wasn't perfect and it probably could have taken more risks, but it executes on some familiar tropes and themes with expert homage to what it's inspired by.
2. Empire of Silence
Even though I'm not as big a fan of this as everyone else seems to be, I did have a really good time with it. The writing style isn't as dense as people made it out to be nor was the plot as gripping as I'd hoped (largely because there wasn't really a truly central plot in the traditional sense). As much as I enjoyed the memoir-inspired style of the prose as well as the intricacies of the fictional universe that the author is carefully crafting here, this may be my first and last experience with the series since I'm not entirely sure that I really want to continue it yet.
3. Fleeting Word
Even though this novella does a good job of delivering a Kallation experience on a much smaller scale and manages to avoid any spoilers for the main entries in the series, I don't know if this is really the best representation of what the series has to offer. It's a fine taste test, but is best read in close succession with either the second or third book in The Kallation Saga, in my opinion.
In October, my biggest goal is to just finish up the Beta read I am in the middle of and giving some of my final thoughts/feedback to the author (at the time of me publishing this post, I have accomplished that goal). In addition to that, I also already started Project Hail Mary on audio toward the end of September, so I will definitely be finishing that up soon. There are a bunch of different possibilities for what else I might decide to pick up be it something spooking, something cozy, something spiritual, or all of the above. I'll have to see where my mood takes me.
